Gilsons Row

The plaque is located on the Dorothy Perkins/Burtons shop at 96 High Street.

A family of Grocers called Gilson traded on this site from from the early 18th century. The whole parade of shops to Crown Hill became known as 'Gilson's Row'.

Other well known traders from the early 20th century include Martin Tweed's Tea Rooms, Nathaniel (Manny) Carter (Watch and Clockmaker), Premier Saloon Hairdressers, The Library Confectioners and Tobacconist and the International Tea Company Stores.

For many years the first floor housed the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
