Rayleigh
Through the Looking Glass
September 2011 Update -
Thought to be a replica of those built on Canvey Island this thatched cottage was built circa 1740 when Crown Hill was just a track between Castle Hill Farm and the High Street. It is a timber framed construction sitting on a brick base on a clay bed. It has a central brick stack.
Owned until 1964 by a number of well known locals when it was then purchased by the Rayleigh Urban District Council.
It is now operated by Rochford District Council on behalf of the Dutch Cottage Trust.
If you would like to see inside the Cottage it is open by prior appointment on
Wednesday afternoon between 1.00pm and 4.00pm.
For information contact Rochford District Council on 01702 546366 or
