March 2013 Update - Air Crash

As many of you  may remember a plane crashed into what was then Mac's Garage in Eastwood Road in September 1987.

The plane which was on a regular newspaper delivery run to Italy had just taken off from Southend Airport when it lost

an engine and caught fire.

It is believed that the pilot who died in the crash made a  decision to steer his doomed plane towards a non residential site

to avoid many deaths and injuries.  

A plaque in memory of the pilot was later erected on the site and today is located on a side fence

in front of the entrance to Sainsbury’s Local.
